Hill House, situated on a hill overlooking the sea on the outskirts of Glasgow, was the home of a family who ran a publishing business. Construction began in 1903, and the design marked a departure from the popular Art Nouveau style of the time, embodying a modern approach to architecture and design.

Mackintosh designed every detail of the house, from the door handles and carpet patterns to the wall decorations, with a distinctive feature being the stark white walls, unusual for the period. The Hill House 1 chair was created in 1904 for the master bedroom, designed not as a functional chair but as a sculptural piece in balance with the room’s overall design. Its delicate components, vertical backrest, and small seat indicate its role as a work of art rather than a functional piece of furniture.

This chair's design differs from Mackintosh's earlier works, which often featured feminine curves, instead incorporating geometric elements. The chair’s design reflects the architect's interest in Japanese art and architecture, which influenced his work at the time.
