003 Butterfly Chair | Fukunaga Print
1:16 Series:
Paper models of chairs and interiors to cut, fold, and collect. Flat prints transform into three-dimensional pieces, creating miniature spaces that come to life.
Special thanks to Edward Tadros, grandson of Lucian Ercolani and current chairman of Ercol, for his kind permission to model this chair for the series.
Designer: Lucian Ercolani, 1958
Manufacturer: Ercol
Materials: Veneered Elm Plywood, Solid Beech Legs
In the mid-1950s, Lucian Ercolani developed the 401 Preformed Chair, blending contemporary design influences, such as the Eames, with traditional woodworking techniques. The chair's distinctive feature lies in its legs, crafted using traditional lathe methods, which pass through the veneered plywood seat and are secured with a comb-back joint—a hallmark of Ercol’s craftsmanship. This construction not only provides structural integrity but also defines the chair’s aesthetic.
Nicknamed the Butterfly Chair, it debuted in 1958 and quickly gained popularity before being discontinued in the 1980s. In 2002, Margaret Howell, a longtime admirer of Ercol furniture, prompted its reissue, ensuring the chair's continued production.
