70 Ukiyo-e | Cats Suggested As The Fifty Three Stations Of The Tokaido Pink

250 kr

This famous work by Kuniyoshi, beloved by cat enthusiasts, is a whimsical parody of the Tōkaidō Gojūsan Tsugi (Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō), where each station is humorously represented by cats. The playful depictions of various cats are brimming with charm, and as you gaze upon them, you may feel as though you’re embarking on a fantastical journey alongside these feline companions.

During the Edo period, short-tailed cats were particularly popular. It was believed that as cats aged, their tails could split, transforming them into a mythical creature known as the Nekomata. In this artwork, the station of Okazaki notably features a Nekomata with a split tail, a motif that has also inspired kabuki plays.

This artwork lends itself beautifully to a variety of uses. Beyond hanging as a tapestry or framing for display, its size—approximately 70 cm—makes it perfect for wrapping items like bags, gift boxes, or even wine bottles, adding a touch of elegance and charm to your presentation.
