Echizen Pottery: One of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns
Known for its robust warmth, Echizen Pottery originates from Fukui Prefecture’s Echizen Town, a coastal area along the Echizen coast. The pottery utilizes red clay rich in iron and is fired at high temperatures to produce a distinctive reddish-brown finish. Its durability, even without a glaze, makes it impervious to water, historically leading to its use in daily items like water jars and mortars. This legacy has been carried into modern times, preserving techniques that highlight the natural texture of the clay. Echizen Pottery, with its warm and rustic appeal, is celebrated as one of Japan’s six ancient kilns and a prominent pottery region in the Hokuriku area.

Since it is made by hand, there are individual differences in color and shape.

Product Care Instructions
Microwave Safe

Before First Use:
To prevent dirt from entering fine cracks or crevices on the surface, it is recommended to perform a process called “sealing” as follows:
1. Place the cup in a pot filled with rice water (the water left after rinsing rice).
2. Heat on medium until just before boiling, then reduce to low heat and simmer for about 15 minutes.
3. Turn off the heat and allow the cup to cool to room temperature in the rice water.
4. Wash thoroughly and let it dry completely.

Usage Guidelines:
Avoid sudden temperature changes to prevent damage (e.g., rapid heating or cooling).
Before use, immerse the cup in water to saturate it fully, reducing the risk of stains or odors adhering to the surface.

After Use:
While dishwasher use is allowed, handwashing is recommended to prolong the product’s lifespan.
Avoid overloading in the dishwasher to prevent damage.
Use a soft sponge for cleaning, as abrasive detergents or metal scrubbers may scratch the surface.
Do not soak the cup for extended periods. After washing, dry thoroughly with a soft cloth and store in a well-ventilated area.
Since pottery is absorbent, even when it appears dry, residual moisture inside can lead to mold, stains, or odors. Ensure complete drying before storage.

Other Notes:
Avoid strong impacts that may cause chipping or breakage.
Discontinue use if cracks or damage appear for safety reasons.
The textured surface may feel slightly rough, but this is a natural feature of the clay and does not affect functionality.
Each piece is handcrafted, so variations in color and shape are part of its unique charm.
