70 Ukiyo-e | Cats Juggling Balls Cream
In addition to being displayed as a tapestry or framed artwork, its 70 cm size makes it ideal for use as a bag, wrapping for confectionery boxes, or as elegant packaging for wine bottles.
This piece, a testament to Kuniyoshi’s love for cats, depicts anthropomorphized felines performing acts inspired by the famous Edo-era acrobat, Kikukawa Kunimaru. Scenes include the “Yaezakura,” where a cat skillfully moves a ball across its body, and the “Rangui Watari,” showing a cat crossing stakes while adorably kicking a ball with its paws.
Kyokutemari refers to the art of juggling or bouncing balls as part of acrobatic performances. Historically, the ball (mari) symbolized parental hopes for a child to grow up healthy and well-rounded, much like its shape. Additionally, the mari carried wishes for familial harmony, marital bliss, and a fortunate life. This association with happiness and the idea of “resolving all matters smoothly” also led to its inclusion in bridal trousseaus as a symbol of auspicious beginnings.
