104 Ukiyo-e | Cats Suggested As The Fifty Three Stations Of The Tokaido Pink

516 kr

This famous work by Kuniyoshi, beloved by cat enthusiasts, is a whimsical parody of the Tōkaidō Gojūsan Tsugi (Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō), where each station is humorously represented by cats. The playful depictions of various cats are brimming with charm, and as you gaze upon them, you may feel as though you’re embarking on a fantastical journey alongside these feline companions.

During the Edo period, short-tailed cats were particularly popular. It was believed that as cats aged, their tails could split, transforming them into a mythical creature known as the Nekomata. In this artwork, the station of Okazaki notably features a Nekomata with a split tail, a motif that has also inspired kabuki plays.

Perfect for use as bags, cushion covers, wrapping for isshōbin (1.8L bottles), or large gift packaging, this design offers versatility and charm. While many designs tend to cater to women, ukiyo-e motifs hold strong appeal for men as well. They are often chosen as shoulder bags or thoughtful gifts for occasions like Father’s Day or birthdays, making them a unique and stylish option for anyone.
