The Sussex Chair's origins remain a topic of debate among scholars, though many attribute the design to Philip Webb. Created around 1860 for Red House, the residence of William Morris, it was later produced by Morris & Co., the furniture company founded by Morris. The chair gained popularity from the late 19th to early 20th centuries, becoming a favorite among artists. Notably, it was used in the studio of Pre-Raphaelite painter Edward Burne-Jones.

The Sussex Chair’s simple yet elegant design made it an icon of artistically inclined interiors. Its popularity spurred numerous imitations, with versions sold in department stores like Liberty.
