Mamezara | Azmaya

€17,95

Mamezara (豆皿) are small plates commonly found in Japanese homes. Though compact, they play an important role in daily meals and seasonal celebrations. Traditionally used for serving condiments, pickles, or sweets, they’re also enjoyed for their decorative charm and symbolic shapes — often reflecting good fortune, nature, or playful motifs.

These particular mamezara are made from Amakusa porcelain, using high-grade porcelain stone from Amakusa in Kumamoto Prefecture. Known for its exceptional whiteness, fine texture, and strength, Amakusa Touseki has been a prized material in Japanese porcelain for centuries. The result is a surface that feels soft to the touch yet is highly durable — ideal for both everyday meals and special occasions.

Produced in collaboration with experienced Japanese potters, each plate is carefully shaped and glazed with a focus on balance and usability. The designs are timeless, and their stackable forms make them easy to store or display.

More than tableware — these small plates are also lovely for: – Keeping rings, earrings, or small desk accessories
– Using as an incense holder
– Collecting and mixing for a unique table arrangement

A joy to use every day, whether for a simple lunch or a shared dinner with friends.

Meaning the shapes:

Ume (梅 – Plum Blossom)

Symbol of perseverance and hope. Ume blooms in late winter and is one of the first signs of spring, often representing renewal, resilience, and beauty in adversity.

Mokkou (木瓜 – Quince / Melon-shaped)

A stylized shape resembling a cut gourd or quince, often used in family crests (kamon). It symbolizes protection and continuity, and is considered auspicious.

Hyoutan (瓢箪 – Gourd)

A classic lucky charm. Gourd shapes are associated with good health, protection from evil, and prosperity. Because the word hyoutan also sounds like “floating” or “light,” it can suggest an easy, unburdened life.

Ougi (扇 – Folding Fan)

The shape of a fan spreading open represents growth, expansion, and good fortune. Often used in weddings and celebrations as a symbol of happiness and success.

Himawari (向日葵 – Sunflower)

A cheerful flower that turns toward the sun. It symbolizes positivity, vitality, and longevity.

Tampopo (たんぽぽ – Dandelion)

Represents strength and gentle resilience. Dandelions can thrive in difficult conditions, making them a symbol of endurance and quiet determination.

Momo (桃 – Peach)

A traditional symbol of protection and good luck. In folklore, peaches are said to ward off evil spirits and bring good health and longevity.
