Koro Yunomi - Echizen Pottery - Kushikaki Tea

A Small Teacup to Hold in the Palm of Your Hand
The “Koro Yunomi” is a compact teacup crafted in collaboration with the Kuninari Kiln of Echizen Pottery. It features a design called kushikaki, created by combing the clay to add texture. When held, you can enjoy the sensation of the clay and glaze, the warmth of the tea, and the overall tactile experience. Its size holds about 100ml, perfect for savoring tea one small cup at a time. Enjoy the process of refilling and sipping as part of the experience.

Comb Patterns That Highlight the Natural Texture of Clay
Each Echizen Pottery teacup is handcrafted on a potter’s wheel. The kushikaki technique, where combs are used to scrape the clay, enhances the rustic beauty of the natural clay. Experience the rich tones of the clay unique to Echizen Pottery.

Echizen Pottery: A Historical Craft from Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns
Echizen Pottery, known for its robust and warm appearance, is primarily made in Echizen Town, Fukui Prefecture, along the coast of the Echizen Sea. Characterized by its use of iron-rich red clay, it has a rustic charm. Techniques that highlight the clay’s texture have been passed down through generations, and the pottery’s warmth and subtle elegance continue to be cherished today. As one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, Echizen Pottery represents a significant tradition in the ceramics industry of the Hokuriku region.

Since it is made by hand, there are individual differences in color and shape.

Before Use:
To prevent staining in the fine surface cracks (kan’yu), it is recommended to perform the following sealing method:
1. Place the teacup in a pot with rice water and heat over medium heat.
2. Just before boiling, reduce to low heat and simmer for about 15 minutes.
3. Turn off the heat and let it cool to room temperature in the rice water.
4. Wash thoroughly and allow to dry completely.

During Use:
Avoid sudden temperature changes, as the pottery is sensitive to rapid heating and cooling.
Soak the teacup in water before use to minimize staining and odors.

After Use:
Although dishwasher safe, handwashing is recommended for longevity. Avoid overloading the dishwasher to prevent damage.
Use a soft sponge and avoid abrasive cleaners or metal scrubbers to prevent scratches.
Do not soak for long periods; dry with a soft cloth and ensure thorough drying before storage.
Since pottery is absorbent, unseen moisture can remain inside, leading to mold, stains, or odors. Always ensure complete drying before storing in a well-ventilated area.

Other Notes:
Handle with care to avoid chipping or breaking due to strong impacts.
Discontinue use if cracks or significant damage occur.
Over time, fine surface cracks (kan’yu) may develop. These do not affect functionality and add to the pottery’s unique character.
As each piece is handcrafted, variations in color and shape are to be expected.
