Kata Kata Musubi (Stencil Dye Artists Kata Kata × MUSUBI Collaboration)

Kata Kata, a duo of stencil dye (kataezome) artists, create dyed fabrics and paper using this traditional Japanese technique. Their works, such as hand towels and postcards, are characterized by the warmth of handcrafted artistry, with every step from design to dyeing completed by hand.

In their collaboration with MUSUBI, this unique approach shines through. Following the same meticulous kataezome process, the motifs are hand-carved from stencil paper, preserving the charm of their craftsmanship.

The bear motif has always been a favorite in Kata Kata’s designs. However, in its original form, with empty hands, the design felt unbalanced within a square format. To better fit the furoshiki’s association with gifts, the bear was reimagined holding a large salmon, as if presenting a gift.

With a 100 cm size, this furoshiki can transform into an adorable animal-themed backpack for children. It also serves beautifully as interior fabric, perfect for use as a tapestry, cushion cover, or kids’ play mat, making it versatile for a variety of settings.
