In 1928, Alvar Aalto, together with his wife Aino, won a design competition for a tuberculosis sanatorium in Paimio, Finland. By the time the sanatorium was completed in 1933, Aalto had also designed its furniture. While Marcel Breuer’s tubular steel chairs were considered, Aalto opted for wooden chairs, which offered a warmer touch and better suited the sanatorium's atmosphere.
The Paimio Chair was placed in the lounge area, designed with a reclining angle that eased patients' breathing. Numerous prototypes were created during the design process, resulting in a seat and backrest made from a single piece of molded birch, providing both flexibility and comfort.
Production began in 1935 at Artek, a furniture company co-founded by Aalto, and the chair remains in production today.
