Koro Yunomi – Echizen Pottery

A Teacup That Fits Quietly in the Palm

Small yet full of presence, the Koro Yunomi is crafted in collaboration with Kuninari Kiln in Echizen, one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns. Its surface carries the traces of the kushikaki technique, where combs gently carve into the clay, creating a rhythmic texture that invites touch. Held in the hand, it offers a layered experience—the rawness of the clay, the smooth embrace of the glaze, and the gentle warmth of tea. Holding just 100ml, it encourages slow sips, each refill becoming part of the ritual.

A Surface That Tells the Story of Clay

Formed on the potter’s wheel, each piece bears the marks of its making. The kushikaki pattern highlights the natural richness of Echizen’s iron-rich clay, where deep, earthy tones shift under light. A quiet interplay of texture and form, shaped by time and fire.

Echizen Pottery: A Legacy in Clay

Along the coastline of Fukui Prefecture, Echizen Pottery carries a history stretching back over 800 years. Known for its unglazed, flame-kissed surfaces and organic warmth, it embodies the quiet beauty of Japan’s folk ceramics. Generations of potters have worked with the natural character of the clay, allowing its presence to guide their hands. Even today, these traditions live on—preserved in pieces that are not just vessels, but objects of quiet contemplation.

Each piece is shaped by hand, making every cup unique in its subtle variations of form and color.

Before Use:
To prevent staining in the fine surface cracks (kan’yu), it is recommended to perform the following sealing method:
1. Place the teacup in a pot with rice water and heat over medium heat.
2. Just before boiling, reduce to low heat and simmer for about 15 minutes.
3. Turn off the heat and let it cool to room temperature in the rice water.
4. Wash thoroughly and allow to dry completely.
During Use:
Avoid sudden temperature changes, as the pottery is sensitive to rapid heating and cooling.
Soak the teacup in water before use to minimize staining and odors.
After Use:
Although dishwasher safe, handwashing is recommended for longevity. Avoid overloading the dishwasher to prevent damage.
Use a soft sponge and avoid abrasive cleaners or metal scrubbers to prevent scratches.
Do not soak for long periods; dry with a soft cloth and ensure thorough drying before storage.
Since pottery is absorbent, unseen moisture can remain inside, leading to mold, stains, or odors. Always ensure complete drying before storing in a well-ventilated area.
Other Notes:
Handle with care to avoid chipping or breaking due to strong impacts.
Discontinue use if cracks or significant damage occur.
Over time, fine surface cracks (kan’yu) may develop. These do not affect functionality and add to the pottery’s unique character.
As each piece is handcrafted, variations in color and shape are to be expected.
