Care Instructions

Before using pottery, it’s important to understand how to care for it properly.

Pottery absorbs water, which means liquids like oil, soy sauce, or tea may seep into it if used immediately. Even after washing, stains can linger, particularly on colored pottery where dirt is less visible but can still cause odors and mold over time.

To prevent this, soak the dish in clean water for about 30 minutes to an hour before first use, then dry it thoroughly for 2 to 3 days. If it has not been used for a while, a quick rinse before serving food is recommended.

Traditionally, boiling pottery in rice water was used to prevent staining, but soaking in water for 30 minutes to an hour is a simpler alternative with similar benefits.

With continued use, pottery naturally develops a patina as stains and marks accumulate—this is considered part of its charm, as it evolves with time.

When using dishwashers, ovens, or microwaves, take care. Sudden temperature changes can stress the pottery, potentially leading to chipping or cracking. If a dish is scratched or damaged, avoid using it in a dishwasher or microwave to prevent breakage.

While dishwashers are generally safe, be mindful of placing pottery too close to metal racks, as impacts can cause chips. For best longevity, handwashing is recommended.

Microwave and steamer use is safe, but avoid sudden cooling of hot pottery. Also, refrain from using scratched or cracked pieces in microwaves to prevent breakage.

Do not use bleach on pottery, as it may be absorbed and cause damage.

Lastly, this pottery is not fireproof and should not be placed directly on an open flame.
